Surgeons' Hall Museums

Our approach to the refurbishment of the Playfair Galleries has been to redisplay the Pathology collection touching only lightly on the Playfair Grade A interiors. This included a sensitive approach to working with original shelving units, introducing new lighting and computer touch screens to display film and interactive interpretation.
The central feature of the new Surgery Museum is a reproduction 18th century Anatomy Theatre, where the story is told of the first public dissection in Britain carried out in 1702. The dissection is carried out using a virtual reality cadaver.
The Jules Thorn Galleries have been restored with new modern displays set sympathetically into the rhythm of the original columns, pilasters and decorative mouldings that form the elegant architectural heritage of the building.
