The John Muir Birthplace
Dunbar
John Muir is regarded in America as the father of environmental conservation and the great protector of wild places, yet in his home country of Scotland, is little known. The house in which he grew up in Dunbar had undergone many alterations since Muir left in 1849 and gave a false image of his birthplace. East Lothian Council commissioned us with Richard Murphy Architects to create a new museum and visitor centre. The resultant designs, stripped out all spurious fabric and created a three storey contemporary museum exhibit space within the original structure.
